Hey there folks its been a long time, I know, I’m sorry.
So the staff from Hartford’s “Where We Live” is coming to Norwich for a peak into what a real struggling city looks like. They wanted to know what Norwich has to offer and what are some of the challenges it facess.
I used to live in Central CT/Greater Hartford Area, if you think Hartford has MAJOR hurdles, prepare to feel SO much better about your city status. Norwich is the land the rest of the world forgot. It’s proximity to the casinos has choked it’s restaurants and nightlife, It’s proximity to Waterford and now Lisbon have had major negative impacts on commerce. It’s one of those towns where you get started in life and then you leave. You don’t stay. Areas like West Hartford thrive because the people that live there WANT a nice place to live. I feel like this city has lost the ambition of the people. The citizens of Norwich have got to WANT to make it better, and frankly I don’t see it. No amount of budget restructuring, road construction, or other civic plans will change the fact that the population the lives here is down and out.
Norwich depends heavily on it’s surrounding towns, Lots of (laid off) Pfizer employees live here, Electric Boat, Coast Guard……..If any of these companies suffer, Norwich suffers. It’s not a good position to be the city that is at the mercy of the decisions of all your neighbors.
the positive, Norwich is old, Really Flippin Old. so we have amazing victorian and colonial houses and architecture here. NFA has the art museum, which is great…..and there is one bar in town that (for lack of a better term) the “alternative” crowd can go to, called the harp and dragon……..that is about all I can think of.
Maybe they will discuss some of this. But I’m sure 60% of the hour long conversation will be a bunch of feel goodery about the arts center, and how great the arts are, and the old houses……blah blah………BLAH!
