CT Public Radio Comes to Norwich

Hey there folks its been a long time, I know, I’m sorry.

So the staff from Hartford’s “Where We Live” is coming to Norwich for a peak into what a real struggling city looks like. They wanted to know what Norwich has to offer and what are some of the challenges it facess.

I used to live in Central CT/Greater Hartford Area, if you think Hartford has MAJOR hurdles, prepare to feel SO much better about your city status. Norwich is the land the rest of the world forgot. It’s proximity to the casinos has choked it’s restaurants and nightlife, It’s proximity to Waterford and now Lisbon have had major negative impacts on commerce. It’s one of those towns where you get started in life and then you leave. You don’t stay. Areas like West Hartford thrive because the people that live there WANT a nice place to live. I feel like this city has lost the ambition of the people. The citizens of Norwich have got to WANT to make it better, and frankly I don’t see it. No amount of budget restructuring, road construction, or other civic plans will change the fact that the population the lives here is down and out.

Norwich depends heavily on it’s surrounding towns, Lots of (laid off) Pfizer employees live here, Electric Boat, Coast Guard……..If any of these companies suffer, Norwich suffers. It’s not a good position to be the city that is at the mercy of the decisions of all your neighbors.

the positive, Norwich is old, Really Flippin Old. so we have amazing victorian and colonial houses and architecture here. NFA has the art museum, which is great…..and there is one bar in town that (for lack of a better term) the “alternative” crowd can go to, called the harp and dragon……..that is about all I can think of.

Maybe they will discuss some of this. But I’m sure 60% of the hour long conversation will be a bunch of feel goodery about the arts center, and how great the arts are, and the old houses……blah blah………BLAH!

Spooky Stuff

Dark Manor Sprague CT

I was cruising around town just trying to see what I could see and i stumbled upon this. Dark Manor Haunted House http://www.darkmanorproductions.com

I think the drive to get to this place is scarier then the actual haunted house. You have to drive all the way through Greenville ANNNND Taftville, not for the faint of heart.

And there is a mystery about this place. I went to the website and everything is written from 2010!!!!!!! it’s as if the web master………………disappeared………

Where could the webmaster be? could he be roaming the halls of the Dark Manor? Did he not survive last years Graveyard Camp Out with 2009 Winner Michael Sherman from Merrick NY…………………………?…………..interesting indeed………………..muahahahahaha……..

Considering Oct 31 is only 2 months away, you’d think the webmaster would be present to update the site………….curious circumstances surrounding the Dark Manor Haunted House Website………mehyes!!!!!!!!!…….Curious indeed…………….muahahahahahaha!

PS: this place is technically in Sprague CT which is outside of the Dead Rose City Limits, HOWEVER the website for Dark Manor says NORWICH!!!!!!!!!!! So We’re running this late breaking story!! HOT NEWS!

This One is Dedicated to Maxwell Goldman

So I got a nice tweet today take a look:

“@tyegoldman: hey do you plan to keep this up? Think you should, could be cool. Norwich needs something cool.”

Thanks tyegoldman! This was awesome to see that someone caught wind of DeadRoseCity! This deserves a real answer. In short; YES I do plan on keeping this up. I have a few posts in draft form that I have been sitting on for a bit, and I have materials gathered for blog posts well into the holiday season.

Tyegoldman makes 2 good points: “Could be cool”  With your help, I say WILL be cool sir! If you feel the same way I do about Norwich, Please tell you friends, tweet about us, Facebook, help get the word out. This was great to hear, and if i know more people are looking for an alternative view of our home city, then it helps to keep us going here at DRC!

Point number two: “Norwich needs something cool” I could not agree more. This city is bleeding to death, and has been for years….years and years and years. We need something more then cool, we need a shift in how people look at the city they call home. Instead of partying in Hartford, go to the Harp and Dragon, Instead of going to New London for shows, help get shows up here in Norwich. The fundamental problem with Norwich is that no one NEEEDS to come here for ANYTHING. The casinos have big name entertainment, and Waterford and New London have all the shopping, and maybe 2 restaurants in the greater Norwich region worth going to……see the problem?

It will take courageous, out-going individuals to bring hip, attractive business to this town. Before business owners do that they need people! People need to leave their houses and be active in their community. I’m not saying have a blood drive in your front porch, I’m saying get out and WALK around your area. It’s Easy! Say Hi to the cute girl down the street, Walk your dog, walk with your boyfriend or girlfriend, husband or wife. When you go to a cool, fun city anywhere in the world what do you see????? You see PEOPLE!

Unfortunately the majority of the people that walk the streets of Norwich seem a little menacing. I don’t think i’m alone in feeling this way. By no means am i saying they ARE menacing, but some of them frankly seem that way. Perception counts for a lot. Now if your in Norwichtown you probably don’t think there is anything wrong. But go downtown……….there is a court house…..a bunch of people who have already broken the law congregating in one place to get punished. Not exactly inviting right? there is good news though we have a way of changing the landscape. Again it requires Getting out of the house and walking around. Certain kinds of people own the streets because it got handed to them. Cable tv made it easy to stay inside and forget our neighbors. If more people just walked their dogs, took a stroll, walked to the corner store for a coffee in the morning, and did this over a sustained time line, things could really turn around. The change in Norwich has got to come from within, it’s citizens have got to WANT to reclaim their home. No amount of police and government intervention will change this.

So tyegoldman, you are right, Norwich Needs something cool, luckily we already have it, we just need it to put down the xbox controller and get the hell outside! Thanks tyegoldman! We’ll keep writing I promise!

The Future is NOW!

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox on Washington Street.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox

This build has a pretty neat futuristic / modernist design. The most obvious feature being the bubble windows in the white arch on the front of the building. There is a strange relationship between the boxiness of the over all wall structure VS the curviness of the dome, arch and bubbles.  I’m always distracted by this when I drive by.

I feel like everyone that enters or leaves this building should be wearing futuristic, skin tight, silver jump suits. I don’t know much about the Greek Orthodox religion but I like what I see of their buildings. It’s by no means the most stunning church in this area but it is absolutely unique. So with that we give Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox on Washington Street a little Dead Rose City nod for having a really cool building! Thanks!

Found Norwich Stuff – Bowling Pin and Cowboy

While sitting at my Xbox checking out movies on Netflix I came accross this documentary from PBS called “A Program About Unusual Buildings & Other Roadside Stuff.” The title is pretty dead on about the premise of the movie. I was pretty surprised to see a couple Norwich land marks in there.

The Muffler Man, Surplus Unlimited next to Eblens and Walgreens. at 2 min 19sec

I always though this was a Cowboy, maybe at one point he held a muffler? Not sure why they call him a Muffler Man.

The next time the doc goes back to Norwich is at the end of the film. They use the land marks to set up a segment about cartoonist Bill Griffith and his Comic book character “Zippy the Pin Head”. Zippy is clown that can talk to road side attractions, including the Muffler man and the Norwich Ten Pin Bowling Pin.

49:44 Zippy the Pinhead in front of cowboy

50:21 then the next shot goes to the bowling pin:

51:27 finally the last instance is of the bowling pin in comic form:

The doc over all is pretty interesting, it covers roadside attractions from all over the country, so it’s cool to know that other people out there are seeing some stuff from our backyard. If anyone has any info about these 2 things, or about Bill Griffith feel free to comment.

Welcome to Taftville.

If you don’t already know, Taftville is a neighborhood on the north side of Norwich established in 1866, this part of town is OLD! Taftville is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A golden oldie textile town built on pride and hardwork.

there are 2 VERY DISTINCT and landmarks in Taftville. When you see these 2 things you know EXACTLY where you are.

The Ponemah Mill

and….

This Car

***UPDATE JAN 14th 2012*** I recent drove by this again, and the car was gone! maybe a sign of improvements to come?

This historic landmark was built in Detroit MI in the mid 1980′s and sent to the people of Norwich as a gift. It bounced from location to location, but in the early 2000′s the planning committee agreed upon this crimson beacon of friendships’ final resting place. As you can see it is only INCHES from the road.

You can find this little known treasure on Maennerchor Ave. about a block away from Norwich Ave. Depending on which way you are coming from you might miss it’s true majesty. If you turn on Maennerchor Ave from Norwich Ave you will absolutely miss it.

The trick is to get on to Maennerchor Ave further up the the hill. If you get on to Meannerchor Ave from Hunters Rd, drive about a mile, Go down the hill and THERE SHE IS!!!!! In all of her glory, welcoming you to the Shetucket Ave & Terrace Ave portion of Taftville. I can’t think of a more fitting way for that neighborhood to say hello.

Amazing Historic Architecture of Norwich

This unusual “house” is in Greenville, Across from the equally fascinating “Patch and Leather” motorcycle accessory store. The place that has been trying to sell the same green dune buggy for 3 years for “$5000 Firm”… they aren’t kidding about the “firm” either.

Here is a Google Maps Street view of the Buggy Truck from 2009!

I don’t want to poke fun at anyone’s economic standings, but do people live in this thing? Why was it built? It has a chimney on the other side, so you know this thing was meant for human occupation.

I can’t imagine what the real estate listing for a house like this would be…..I can only speculate it would go something like this-

FOR SALE: The Worst House in Existence - 1 room, 2 windows, no bath, lots of regret. Perfect for no one.

I honestly hope it’s not a house. Maybe it’s storage, but I have a nagging suspicion people live there, or at very least, have lived there in the past. If any one knows anything about this thing please chime in.

State Rep. Chris Coutu on Channel 3 this Father’s Day.

You can read more about this on the Norwich Bulletin here:

http://www.norwichbulletin.com/government/x1388114832/Rep-Coutu-to-make-Fathers-Day-appearance-on-Face-the-State#axzz1POmUi8ry

I personally didn’t vote for the guy, But I’d be curious to see what he has to say about the sad state of our beloved rose.

The Rose Of New England?

Welcome To Norwich The Rose of New EnglandWithout this sign we wouldn’t have the clever website name, but REALLY? THE ROSE? I don’t think Norwich could be considered the rose of Eastern CT, let alone ALL of New England. I’ve seen pictures of Norwich in it’s former glory, but to still maintain that this city is the rose of New England is a bit of a stretch.

Rose McGowanNorwich reminds me of another Rose. Like Norwich, she used to be super hot, but now is, depressed and struggling to work again. Maybe Norwich should drop the “rose” slogan once and for all?

For those of you lucky enough to live in Norwichtown you are probably saying to yourself “Geez, Thames, that’s an awfully unfair assessment!”

I challenge anyone from Norwichtown to tell me the last time you ventured Downtown, or **GASP** Taftville! What about Greenville? Occum? Here’s a close one, The Norwichtown Mall?? Not StopNShop either, I’m talking the MALL…..the part where there are never any cars……you know what I’m talking about.

While I am being a tad snarky in regards to this, It really does make me think about our city and what can be done to turn it around? No Doubt, there is some charm to living around here. But the problem is that all of the benefits of being in Norwich lies within the surrounding towns assets. Would you rather go to The Dugout near the hardware store, or to Harry’s in Colchester??? Harry’s wins every time. I Appreciate The Dugouts efforts, but the fact remains there is nothing to do in this town, and all the things to do are in other towns or on Indian reservations. I don’t have the answer, but I do wonder if Noriwich can ever come close to days when it was considered The Rose?  What do you think?
